Tegan Nox thought she had gotten one over on Dakota Kai by qualifying for the Ladder Match to determine the #1 Contender for the NXT Women's Championship. Kai had lost her qualifying match to Mia Yim, only to snatch a way in by winning the Second Chance Gauntlet Match. This ladder match was originally scheduled to take place at NXT TakeOver: Tampa Bay on April 4, 2020 but the CO-VID 19 Pandemic put a stop to Live Events with crowds for a time. A few of the planned matches took place on NXT Television including the #1 Contender Ladder Match.

April 8, 2020. Full Sail. Winter Park, Florida. WWE NXT. Tegan would have to fight off five other competitors and ascend a ladder, grabbing the briefcase containing the contract. Mia Yim. Candice LeRae. Dakota Kai. Io Shirai. Chelsea Green. Friend and foe alike. It was every woman for herself, however in the early going Nox joined forces with Yim and LeRae to maul their former friend Kai who had betrayed them all. Candice and Tegan soon found themselves ascending a ladder at the same time, facing the possibility they might have to trade blows.

Candice and Tegan didn't have to revisit their independent wrestling battles because their ascent to the top of the ladder was halted by other competitors. The battle raged on with the war between Nox and her former bestie Kai often taking center stage. But Dakota wasn't the only pestersome presence. The original pain in the backside Chelsea Green tried to snatch a ladder from right under Tegan's nose. Nox put a swift stop to that, winning a tug of war for that ladder. Nox started the climb only for Kai to smash her head on the top rung.

Tegan would get some sweet revenge on Dakota's intervening acquaintance Raquel Gonzalez who had dropped Nox back-of-skull first into a table at NXT TakeOver: Portland. This revenge came in the form of Nox assisting Yim in putting Raquel through a table. Tegan grasped Raquel by the neck, providing a push to give Yim momentum in sitdown powerboming Raquel off the ropes through a table set up on the ringside floor.

That sweet revenge would have been perfectly followed by a climb to victory. Unfortunately, Tegan's hopes and dreams were slashed by Dakota who Kai-Kicked her off the apron, crashing her through a bridged ladder. Although Nox could find some peace in the fact Kai didn't win the match either, their war was still clearly far from over. Fortunately for Tegan, she was about to make herself a new ally as one of her present drifted her way off to her own delusional world.
